Access at Colliderfest

We want to make Colliderfest accessible to everyone. If there is any way we can support your visit, please contact us.

You can find out about the various venues being used as part of Colliderfest below. Many of these sites have lots of access information including visual stories, quick access guides, floor plans and videos.

Assistance Dogs

Guidance and assistance dogs are welcome throughout the festival zones.  
Please advise us you are bringing an assistance dog when you book tickets for any shows at Hull City Hall or the Mortimer Suite. Contact us on 01482 300306.   
Please note, no animals other than assistance dogs may be brought into the History Centre. This includes emotional support animals which are not trained assistance dogs. There is a small park next to the Centre where dogs can be exercised. 
Both Assistance Dogs and Emotional Support Dogs are welcome at The Deep. 

Baby Changing Facilities

Streetlife Museum 
Baby changing facilities are available during the museum’s opening hours in the toilets nearest the Streetlife museum entrance. 
Ferens Art Gallery 
Baby change facilities are available during the gallery’s opening hours in the accessible toilets to the rear of the Ferens Art Gallery building. 
Hands on History Museum 
Baby change facilities are available in the accessible toilet in Hands on History Museum during the museums opening hours. 
Hull and East Riding Museum 
A baby change facility is available in the toilets situated in the Roman gallery, at the back of the Hull and East Riding Museum during the museums opening hours. 
Hull History Centre 
Baby changing facilities are available at Hull History Centre during opening hours. 
Hull Minster 
Baby changing facilities are available at Hull Minster during opening hours. 
Wilberforce Institute 
Although there is not a dedicated baby changing space at the Wilberforce Institute you can speak to a member of staff for recommendations of a suitable space to use.   
The Deep  
Baby changing facilities are available in the accessible toilets throughout the building at The Deep during opening hours.

Carers and Personal Assistants

Carers and personal assistants are welcome to join the people they support on their visit to the festival.  
Free personal assistant tickets can be booked for paid shows at Colliderfest. Please get in touch to find out more. 

Disabled Parking

Please note, during the festival a small number of road closures will be in place. These will include Paragon Street from Chariot Street to Queen Victoria Square, Whitefriargate the full length, Parliament Street, and Trinity House Lane. 
Hull and East Riding Museum, Streetlife Museum and Wilberforce Institute 
There is blue badge parking on Gandhi Way (across from the main entrance), and also on Alfred Gelder Street nearby. 
Short stay pay and display parking is available at Lowgate car park on Wilberforce Drive, just a five-minute walk away. 
Ferens 
There are nine designated disabled parking spaces on Paragon Street (behind City Hall), a few minutes away from the gallery. 
Hull Minster and Hands On History Museum 
You’ll find blue badge parking on South Church Side or nearby on Silver Street.  
There’s also parking at Market Place (on-street), Osbourne Street and Lowgate (multi-storey) or Wilberforce Drive (pay and display). 
Hull History Centre 
The History Centre short stay car park has 51 spaces including 4 disabled parking spaces. There is step-free access from the car park into the History Centre. Blue Badge holders may park for free in the car park and at nearby parking meters. Please see Hull City Council’s Disabled Badge Parking for full information. 
The Deep   
There are several accessible bays in the main car park. These are the bays closest to the Humber estuary, and are 50 metres from the main entrance doors. During peak times, these may be full. Parking is free for blue badge holders, but chargeable otherwise.  There is also a drop-off point at the main entrance, which has a dropped kerb. 

Lighting

Streetlife Museum  
Some parts of Streetlife Museum are a bit darker, including: the carriage gallery and bicycle gallery upstairs. 
Hand On History Museum 
Some areas of the Hands on History Museum can be quite dark, including: the Ancient Egypt gallery and the Victorian laundry. 
Hull and East Riding Museum  
Some areas of the Hull and East Riding Museum can be quite dark, including: the Fossil, Prehistoric, Iron Age, Celtic World and Anglo-Saxon galleries. 
Ferens Art Gallery 
There is low lighting in Gallery 1 of Ferens Art Gallery. 
History Centre  
The History Centre uses a combination of natural light and overhead LED lighting throughout the public areas.  
Colliderfest After Dark 
In addition to daytime programming, there will be two exciting Colliderfest After Dark events on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th March from 6:30pm – 9:30pm. These events will involve light projections onto buildings and strobe lighting effects. These will take place in three locations: Queen Victoria Square, Beverley Gate and Trinity Square.

Quiet Spaces

Certain areas will be less busy and quieter during Colldierfest. Wilberforce House and the Wilberforce Institute in the Discovery Zone and Hands on History Museum in the Exploration Zone are anticipated to be quieter venues.  
There will be a chill out zone at Wilberforce Institute with some comfy seats and free refreshments available.  
The Broadley Chapel on the South side of Hull Minster is a quiet prayer space but can also be used as a general quiet space, please speak to a volunteer about quiet spaces inside the Minster. 
A quiet space can be made available on request in Streetlife Museum. Please ask a member of staff at the welcome desk for access to the quiet space.  

Relaxed Workshops

There will be a relaxed workshop on both Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th with limited numbers designed for children who have a disability, are neurodivergent or experience anxiety and who would struggle to attend our other sessions.   
The relaxed workshop will be ‘Sensational Science’. Further information about the workshop can be found on the what’s on and booking pages. 

Roads and Paths

All event spaces are within pedestrianised areas however a small number of road closures will be in place. These will include Paragon Street from Chariot Street to Queen Victoria Square, Whitefriargate the full length, Parliament Street, and Trinity House Lane. 
Streetlife Museum 
High Street is a cobbled street with a paving stone pavement. Streetlife Museum has step-free access, and there is a dropped kerb near the main entrance. Streetlife Museum also has a street scene set up inside with cobbled flooring (in part of the ground floor gallery). 
Ferens Art Gallery 
Ferens Art Gallery has a ramp entrance with a shallow incline. 
Hand On History 
South Churchside is a cobbled street with a paving stone pavement. 
Hull Minster 
South and North Churchside are cobbled streets with paving stone pavements.  
As a medieval building, some areas of the flooring inside are uneven but still accessible. 
Hull and East Riding Museum 
High Street is a cobbled street with a paving stone pavement. It has dropped kerbs at the Museums Quarter entrances. 
Hull History Centre  
There is step-free access from the car park into the History Centre. All public areas in the History Centre are on the ground floor. There are no steps but there is a gentle slope upwards from the main entrance into the arcade.  
Wilberforce Institute 
High Street is a cobbled street with a paving stone pavement. Please access WISE from the entrance in the Museums Gardens by Streetlife Museum. There will be signs directing you to the correct entrance to use. To get to the first floor of the building there are five steps going up (with a handrail) or to get down to the lower floor there are six steps. 
The Deep  
Our main entrance has level access and there is also level access from the car park to our outdoor picnic area.

Sensory Information

Colliderfest will likely be a busy event so in certain areas there will be crowds. The zones won’t be too loud, but it may be noisier during certain shows which may have loud noises as well as bright lights. There will be staff and volunteers on hand so please ask questions if you need any help or get in touch with us before the festival.  
Hands on History, Hull and East Riding, Streetlife Museum and Ferens Art Gallery all have a box of sensory resources available to borrow at the welcome desk. These include ear defenders, coloured filters for reading, a magnifier and fidget toy which can be borrowed. Please speak to a member of staff to find out more or to borrow any of the items. 
Sensory packs are available to borrow free of charge from the reception team for your visit at The Deep. 
Hull Minster have a number of ear defenders available to borrow at the welcome point. 
In addition to daytime programming, there will be two exciting Colliderfest After Dark events on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th March from 6:30pm – 9:30pm. These events will involve light projections onto buildings, strobe lighting effects and smoke effects. These will take place in three locations: Queen Victoria Square, Beverley Gate and Trinity Square. It is expected that it will be busy at these events, however, you will be able to move freely between the zones as you wish and do not need any tickets or to book a timed slot.  
Workshops and shows sensory information: 
Out of the Blue: Out of the Blue doesn’t contain any text or spoken word. All the storytelling is expressed through movement and physicality.  
Matthew Tosh: PyroTrickery is a show exploring fire and fire effects. Expect bright lights, loud noises and smells during this show.  
Zoolab: The Zoolab workshop will involve live animals. You can find out more about them here: Meet The Team 
Sensational Science (Relaxed Session): This workshop will be hands-on and mostly self-directed, so children can get up and down and work on their illusions at their own pace. It’s a quiet workshop, so there will be no loud bangs or noises. The workshop leader will be on hand to answer as many questions as children like during the session. 
Hunting the Higgs: Expect loud bangs, lots of engagement and noise during this show. 

Tickets

You will need to pre-book a ticket to attend one of our shows or workshops. All workshops are free of charge. Some of the shows are free and some will be paid for. Full details can be found on our website. Personal assistants can book a free ticket to attend paid for shows.  
The Rewilding Zone will be in the foyer area at The Deep which members of the public can access free of charge. There will also be extra ‘Let’s Get Glowing’ Colliderfest @ The Deep activities taking place form 10am – 3pm on the 15th and 16th March. These activities are free of charge; no entry ticket to The Deep is required to be purchased in order to attend the Colliderfest activities alone. However, standard admission tickets would need to be purchased for entry into the main aquarium, unless you are an Existing Annual Pass Holder. 

Toilets

Streetlife Museum 
There are two sets of toilets at Streetlife Museum. One near the entrance and one at the back of the museum opposite the sweet shop. The accessible toilet is near the entrance. 
The nearest Changing Places toilet is at the Guildhall. There is another Changing Places toilet in the Wilson Centre. Please ask at the reception for directions. 
Ferens Art Gallery 
There are toilets off Gallery 2 at Ferens, including a combined accessible toilet/baby changing facility.  
There is another set of toilets to the right of the café at the rear of the building, including a combined accessible toilet/baby change and unisex cubicles. 
The nearest Changing Places toilet is in the Wilson Centre on Alfred Gelder Street. There’s also a Changing Places toilet at the Guildhall. Please ask at the reception for directions. 
Hands On History 
The toilets at Hands on History are upstairs, accessible by lift. There is a combined accessible toilet/baby change facility. (Please note: the toilets are currently closed for refurbishment.) 
The nearest Changing Places toilet is in Trinity Market across the square (near the Lowgate entrance). 
Hull and East Riding Museum 
There is a set of toilets (including an accessible toilet) at the entrance to the museum, near the shop. 
There are more toilets (including a baby change facility) in the Roman gallery at the back of the museum. 
The nearest Changing Places toilet is on the ground floor of the Guildhall. Please ask at the reception for directions. 
Hull Minster 
There are 6 accessible toilets available within the Minster. A Changing Places toilet is located in Trinity Market (50m). Please note, this is only available during the market’s opening hours. 
Hull City Hall  
Accessible toilets are available on the main floor level. 
Hull History Centre 
All of our toilets are individual and gender-neutral. 
An accessible toilet is available. 
Baby changing facilities are available. 
The nearest Changing Places toilets are in the Wilson Centre and the Guildhall.  
Wilberforce Institute 
There are toilets on each floor. Disabled toilets can be found in the reception area.  
The nearest Changing Places toilet is on the ground floor of the Guildhall. Please ask at the reception for directions. 
The Deep  
At The Deep there is level access and lifts to every toilet in the building.  
All accessible toilets have handrails and emergency alarm cords.  
Located on the ground floor, our Changing Places Facility can be accessed using a RADAR key. Please ask a member of Crew if you need assistance or a key. Our Changing Places Facility is also offered for the general public to use, not just visitors. 
Toilets during Colliderfest After Dark events 
Toilets will be open in Queen Victoria Square and Trinity Market for the two Colliderfest After Dark lights themed evening events on 14th and 15th March 6:30 – 9:30pm. 

Wheelchairs

Streetlife 
Streetlife Museum is accessible for wheelchair users. There is step-free access at the front of the building and a lift to the first floor galleries. We also have a manual wheelchair available to borrow, just ask at reception. 
Some parts of the museum are only accessible via steps, such as the signal box and the platform above the train. 
Ferens Art Gallery 
The Ferens Art Gallery is fully accessible for wheelchair users. We have ramp access at the front of the building and lifts between gallery floors. 
We also have a manual wheelchair available to borrow. Just ask at the front desk or give us a call in advance to make sure it’s available: 01482 616 398. 
Hands On History Museum 
The Hands on History museum is accessible for wheelchair users, with step-free access at the front of the building and a lift to the first floor. Access to the education room and lift is via a ramp. 
We also have a manual wheelchair available to borrow. 
We have some books and puppets on the raised balcony in the Victorian storytelling area. We can bring these down to the ground floor for you – just ask our friendly team for assistance.  
Hull and East Riding Museum 
The museum is accessible for wheelchair users, with step-free access at the front of the building and two lifts between floors. Lifts are situated near the front and back of the museum, next to the stairs. 
We also have a manual wheelchair available to borrow. 
Hull Minster  
There is ramped access into the church making Hull Minster wheelchair accessible. 
Hull City Hall 
Wheelchair spaces are available for booking at all events. These are in the stalls for seated events and on a viewing platform for standing events. 
Lift access is available to stalls and circle levels only.  
The lifts can be accessed by using the Paragon Street entrance. 
Hull History Centre 
All public areas in the History Centre are on the ground floor. There are no steps but there is a gentle slope upwards from the main entrance into the arcade. 
The doors from the street into the arcade, and from the arcade into the library, are automatic. The door from the library into the searchroom is manual. Staff are always on hand should you need any assistance. 
Wilberforce Institute 
We regret that wheelchair access is not available in the Wilberforce Institute. Support is possible for those with mobility aids, but access into the building is via a set of steps (five going up or six going down). Once in the main building all floors are accessible via a lift.  
The Deep  
The Deep is proud to be a fully-wheelchair accessible attraction.  
There is ramp access throughout the building which is on a gently sloped downward gradient. Our main entrance has level access and there is also level access from the car park to our outdoor picnic area. 
The Deep are also able to offer complimentary use of a limited number of mobility aids, all of which are available at Reception to be hired free of charge for the duration of your visit. We are unable to reserve electric wheelchairs, however our manual wheelchairs, rollators with seats and tri-walkers can all be pre-booked for your visit.
